don't forget that a lot of us "grow up" around mid 20's so change anyway. As for being in prison, nothing like being in a place where you can't do a lot to straighten you out.

Strip off the old personality
by eyeuse2badub inyesterday’s watchtower talked about how by becoming a jw it enabled “worldly” people to ‘strip off the old personality’ and make really significantly good changes in their life.. paragraph named 4 individuals (anonymous names of course and probably embellished tales)) sakura, ribeiro, stephen, and hans.
their lives changed for the good because they found god or because they became jw’s---right?.
so on the way home from this wt meeting, my wife commented to me how wonderful our brotherhood is and how it helps people who would otherwise be ‘lost’ n this world.

Dietary Quirks Among JWs
by millie210 ini recently had to accompany an older family member out of state to a family reunion.
it was a big reunion and not much was overtly made of the fact that i am "misguided" and not attending meetings (lost soul that i am) which was nice.
the thing i noticed that i was most struck by was all the dietary quirks in evidence during our 3 days together.

the original sin wasn't the apple, it was refined sugar!!!!!!!! when I was a kid I thought only JWs ate health food, and didn't understand how the stores could stay in business with us only.
I am old enough that cooking with aluminum still bothers me.

I can converse about football, baseball, fishing, calfornia fires, earthquakes (not the sign), hurricanes, local bad traffic, new comers in town, trump/hilliary/putin. Weather, health problems, food, crime, pretty children. I joked with a return visit about the embarrassing 8 page magazines, the simplified stuff, don't remember if I even brought up the generation thing (explain that one). I did try to put a good slant on things.
will new time slips have a spot for conversations had this month? along with placements, video showings. Remember the original advise: ask the householder for their password to show them?

The Ever-Changing Song Book
by Cimarrona inthe songs in the old brown song book were way better than these new ones.
had they not changed the songs, i may never have left (halfway joking).
they gave no feeling, no soul (but of course there's no such thing as soul or whatever)!

Anything close to good was done away with. The really old songbooks had hymns, probably all plagiarized. the music sounds like a mix of old TV, Disney, and Mr. rogers,
the "choir" is embarrassing, can't they afford actual robes, or uniforms.
The christian pop songs reference is that some of the things they put out is identical sounding to what you hear on any of the Sunday morning TV evangelists, right down to a "pretty" singer.

It's Going Down: The Family Is About to Go to War Over... Halloween Decorations.
by Sorry inyup, you read right.
despite other personal turmoil that needs to be addressed, my family has decided to go nuts over halloween decorations being "too close" to our yard.
a new family just moved in next door; their kids are super young.

so much for not forcing our religion on other people. the neighbors put up haloween, xmas, turkey day and all, but it is THEIRS. No red ties in December, Orange in Nov? don't even think about punkins
the projector sounds like fun, can you do a sample presentation (oops conversation) with the shadow figures to project next time someone comes to the door?

Just watched 60 minutes recording. The story/timeline keeps changing. Seems now the security guard was shot before the start of the massacre. We normal people can't think like a nutso, it goes against our ingrained sense of right. Therefore we have a hard time understanding because we can't imagine being in his shoes.
If you rent a room or suite, you do not have to have the linen changed, or room cleaned. Just keep the privacy sigh up. Does anyone really pay much attention to someone carrying suitcases in? Even long guns that are not "takedown" can still be disassembled stock from barrel making it shorter, then put back together in the room.
As for the founding writers of the bill of rights forseeing everything, they couldn't. But they also couldn't forsee telephones, TV, radio, internet, all things that are protected by the first amendment. I think if you could show then the weapons and power of modern governments, they would say that none of the things we see should have been allowed to even start. That is why they wanted the civilian to have available what was state of art weapons at that time. You cannot discount the ability of poorly equipped LOCALS to expel foreigners. Look at the history of Afganistan, and other places where a ragtag army wore out the enemy.

Trivial stuff about the AGM
by sir82 inlots of good comments already about the content of saturday's agm broadcast.. i just thought i'd add my (trivial!
) comments about the magnificent 7:.
-- loesch - was he intentionally trying to be boring?
-
road to nowhere
I was wrong about it taking 15 minutes to summarize. More like 5.
I think Loesch is the most normal, if you met him somewhere you wouldn't think much about his oddities.
The reading is not a burden in amount, just that it puts you to sleep and does NOT stimulate you thinking.
The efforts to pull in children seems to be a bust, hence stopping a bunch of the crap.
I thought type/antitype was all passe. It was mentioned in the temple bit.
Anyone get the coal test comment? You have to go way back in history to understand that reference. If someone doesn't chime in, I will comment later.

Disaster Relief - Used to Beg For Money/Charity
by thedepressedsoul infor a organization that "doesn't ask for money" they sure do ask a lot.. i've been noticing that over the last few months "disaster relief" has been brought up in almost everything jw.
wt, congregation study, broadcast, special updated video, etc.... & i've noticed two things every time it gets brought up, which is a lot lately.. they talk about giving physically and how much money will be needed for the disaster relief work.
that we should be generous.

Note that they always ask that you do not designate the donation for any set disaster fund, but rather to general use, so they can do what they danm well please with it.
I figure that if I sent in money tagged for "whatever" they would just subract the amount they would have sent otherwise to help others.
From what I can tell the relief is done by nearby congregations with THEIR funds and manpower. The most the borg does is keep track of who is doing what where and then taking credit. I have never seen an actual check or recepit for anything the bigwigs did.

Assembly
by dothemath indragged to the convention, the speaker was from the canada bethel.. one of his talks went into the refugees not being welcome, and some countries attitude toward foreigners in general, and even mentioning acts of genocide.. he contrasted this with the bible, and showed the scripture where israelites were to be kind to other nationalities living among them(there is a verse that says that).. i don't think he gave the complete picture though, as israel also practiced genocide.. then jehovah said to me, ‘see, i have already begun to give siʹhon and his land over to you.
start to take possession of his land.’ 32 when siʹhon came out along with all his people to meet us in battle at jaʹhaz, 33 jehovah our god handed him over to us, so that we defeated him, his sons, and all his people.
34 we captured all his cities at that time and devoted every city to destruction, including men, women, and children.

relief for Puereto Rico
by road to nowhere inif i got the broadcast about the relief work right, apparently the jw's don't have problems with blocked roads and lack of gasoline, and no phone or electric working.
the truer part was probably that people (not just jw's) share and help each other.
i didn't follow the donation part completely, $3 million.

If I got the broadcast about the relief work right, apparently the JW's don't have problems with blocked roads and lack of gasoline, and no phone or electric working. The truer part was probably that people (not just JW's) share and help each other. I didn't follow the donation part completely, $3 million. Was that donated to the org. or given by them? What does work out is that with over 25000 JW's, it is less than $120 per.
It is true that you cannot drive a truck from a neighboring area over there, ships have to be loaded and manned; and a free for all on supplies would benefit thieves. So some of the criticism of the government is off base.
Some of this has been posted already but I couldn't find the older post.
